3D Clipping is an interactive editing tool within the volume rendering environment that allows the radiologist to clip selected portions of the 3D study.

What It Does

It removes the voxels contained within the selected region from the displayed volume, exposing the anatomy of interest by removing the structures obstructing it. The tool operates on volume rendering (VR) and is reversible at any time. It offers two selection modes: freehand, which sculpts along an arbitrary hand-drawn contour, and box, which defines a rectangular region. Both modes can act in either direction: inside removes everything contained within the region, while outside preserves the region and removes everything else. The clips are applied to the rendered representation, not to the source data, so the original volume is always preserved.

Clinical Value and Use

The tool is especially valuable where overlapping structures conceal the target anatomy:

  • CT angiography: remove bone, dense calcifications, or overlapping veins to clearly visualize the arterial tree.
  • Neurovascular imaging: remove the skull to visualize the circle of Willis, characterize aneurysms, or trace a vessel's course without surrounding interference.
  • Trauma and orthopedics: isolate a fracture fragment or a specific bone structure for evaluation.
  • Artifact and device cleanup: remove external lines, electrodes, or hardware that degrade the reconstruction.

The result is a clearer image for diagnosis and a more communicative 3D view for referring physicians and surgical planning.

Impact on the Physician's Workflow

3D Clipping shortens the path to a usable 3D image. Instead of leaving the reading environment for a dedicated segmentation step, the radiologist clears the volume within the same environment: the box mode delivers quick, broad cuts, freehand provides precision where needed, and the inside/outside options handle both subtraction and isolation tasks. The interaction is intuitive and integrates with the existing PACS workflow, adding capability without imposing a learning burden or disrupting reading speed.
