PACS systems are tools that allow medical data and images, along with their respective interpretations, to be managed, stored and shared in a database. They can be understood as a common ground that integrates data, images and information within a single platform.

They have been extremely useful for radiologists and technicians because, in addition to storing data and images, they allow to operate with them remotely to streamline processes. Its most notable advantage is that they allow access to medical images from anywhere and at any time.

  • It is an intuitive technology that facilitates data lookup and makes information immediately more accessible.
  • They also help provide better tracking of studies and the patient's clinical history. Previous studies, or studies performed using different modalities, can even be compared.
  • Immediate remote access. Taking advantage of cloud storage reduces the use of devices' internal storage (hardware), keeping them running smoothly and efficiently.
  • Remote access also makes it possible to optimize staff time.
  • This prevents data loss and loss of imaging studies, resulting in greater security for radiology department staff, physicians and patients alike.
  • They allow savings on material costs such as the film used in traditional imaging studies, and other paper-related expenses.
  • They establish a more affordable and sustainable dynamic for the facility in the short and long term. For example, there is no need to purchase certain film materials or physical furniture to store studies.
  • PACS systems also promote better patient care, since patients will see reduced waiting times for results delivery.
